When choosing Prague accommodation and planning a trip to Prague, one of the most iconic of Prague's architectural assets springs to mind. Charles Bridge, also known as Kalov Most, spans the River Vltava joining Prague's Old town with Mala Strana or the Lesser Town.
It is an absolute must see for any trip to Prague, as it is so beautiful as are the views from it. Originally built in the beginning of the 15th Century it has been the scene of floods, executions, and fighting during the Thirty Years War. It has been damaged numerous times over the years but the Charles Bridge of today is a fascinating piece of history and arguably the best of all Prague's bridges.
When choosing Prague accommodation many guests request Prague accommodation close to the Charles Bridge. We have many Prague accommodation units close to the Bridge, but Prague is such a relatively small city that we would recommend Prague accommodation anywhere in the Old Town or Mala Strana for proximity to Charles bridge.
It carried its first Omnibus in the 1870s and later a horse tram replaced this. In September 1890 the bridge was severely damaged by a terrible flood which washed hundreds of wooden logs and other debris against the bridge causing some of the pillars to collapse and some of the statues fell into the water.
The turn of the 20th century saw much increased traffic and the horse drawn trams were replaced by trams until 1908 when a bus service started using the bridge. It was not until the end of World War 2 that the first barricade was built at the Old Town end of the bridge and the last form of transport crossed the bridge in the late 1970s after extensive repairs. Now it is open to pedestrians only, although it still gets very busy as it is a must see destination when staying in Prague accommodation.
Bringing a car into central Prague is not recommended, although if necessary we do have Prague accommodation with parking spaces. They are, however few and far between because the majority of our Prague accommodation is located in historic old buildings built before the invention of cars. There is street parking outside some of our Prague accommodation. If you need help choosing one of our great Prague accommodation apartments with parking, please contact us and we can help.
Charles Bridge is so names as it was commissioned by King Charles 1V. As it is now it has 30 Baroque statues lining its sides representing saints and patron saints. However they are all actually replicas. In 1965, the original statues were dismantled and placed in the National Museum, located in the New Town where we also have much Prague accommodation.
Architecture in Prague is very special and some of our Prague Accommodation is on the most beautiful buildings. Many of our Prague accommodation are in Art Deco buildings with wonderful facades and ironwork.
The bridge is a delight to walk across at any time of the year and at most times of the day. During the winter, the sharp crisp light cast long shadows of the statues across the bridge and the slight river mist swirls up from the water creating a haunting, magical atmosphere. Take an early morning walk from your apartment before most people are awake and you could be one of only a handful of people on the bridge, a sharp contrast to the bridge at most times. At this time, you can find an eerie peace on the bridge. After your morning stroll across the bridge, there is nothing nicer than returning to your cosy warm Prague accommodation for breakfast. One of the major advantages of Prague accommodation apartments versus a hotel is the flexibility of mealtimes being when you choose.
During the summer months, there are always hundreds of people walking across the Bridge taking photographs of their friends and families next to their favourite statue. The sun and many people create a fun and excitement that goes hand in hand with visitors experiencing something very special and unique. If you want to book Prague accommodation with air conditioning in the summer then please let us know, or use the advanced search facility on our Prague accommodation website. You can filter our Prague accommodation to apartments with air conditioning in the Old Town in a couple of clicks.
So whether you choose Prague accommodation close to Charles Bridge, or elsewhere in this beautiful city, you will take home some very special memories of a stunning city.
